‘Power Rangers’ Reboot: First Look at New Suits
Finally, we get to see what this new cinematic take on the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers looks like post-transformation. They look like Tony Stark designed them.
The first image of the new Power Rangers reboot costumes is here, and boy are they colorful. We kind of had a heads up that we’d be in for something different after getting a look at Elizabeth Banks’ Poison Ivy-lookin’ villain Rita Repulsa, but these new Power Rangers costumes look a bit more like an exoskeleton or superhero costume than the traditional armor that was worn on the long-running TV series.
Per EW, who debuted this first image, this is “translucent extraterrestrial armor that crystallizes around their bodies.” As director Dean Israelite—who helmed the sci-fi found footage pic Project Almanac—explains, the suit design is an extension of the character themes:
“The show was about kids coming of age, about metamorphosis. These suits needed to feel like they were catalyzed by these kids and their energy, their spirit.”
The production designer Andrew Menzies confirms that the costume is indeed alien in nature, saying
“Ours is an alien costume that grows on them, that’s not man-made. You can’t win everyone over, but we are trying to appeal to a more mature audience and gain new fans.”
