Robert Downey Jr. Says Sherlock Holmes 3 is Happening This Year

It's been five years since the release of the Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, which is the second movie of the Sherlock franchise. Now, it appears, the story may have just been cracked. Last we heard, Iron Man 3 co-writer Drew Pearce was working on a screenplay. Now it looks like it will be happening very soon.

While talking in a interview with Shortlist, Robert Downey Jr. revealed that Sherlock Holmes 3 is still in active development, clarifying that:

“We’re talking about it right now. We can do some preliminary stuff.” 

The actor then noted that if everything works out, production on the third Sherlock Holmes installment will get started later this year:

“If we could shoot it on Skype, we could have the whole [movie] done in a week. When we’re making those Sherlock movies it is off the hook. [So] we’ll attempt to make one this year. It really is a big deal to go and do those movies. I’m tired all the time, but I’m so excited about it.”

Sherlock Holmes 3 is being written by Iron Man 3 and Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation co-writer Drew Pearce, as well as Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes and Man from U.N.C.L.E. co-writer Lionel Wigram. The latter screenwriter confirmed in 2015 that (actor/director scheduling issues aside) the writers behind the movie have been taking their time to make certain that Sherlock Holmes 3 is “going to be the best of the three.” Wigram’s own comments echoed those previously made by Law, who similarly affirmed his commitment to making sure Sherlock Holmes 3 is a worthwhile addition to the previous two installments (having said he’s personally “so proud of those films”).

Not only is Downey Jr. quite busy, but his Holmes co-star Rachel McAdams has found herself tied up with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well. The actress will make her debut in Doctor Strange this November. At this moment it is very difficult to speculate when production will start, may be late 2016 before Infinity War filming or may be after the two part Avengers movie or may be in between, who knows???, but it is very pleasant that at least there are talks about it.
